I hope all my writing friends have had a good Labor Day -- relaxing, if you took the day off, or productive, if you spent it working in some fashion. I've done a little of both: I slept in and got caught up on sleep, and this afternoon I did chores at the barn. Now I'm home, and -- having cooked and done laundry -- am getting ready to buckle down and write a little before bed.
Thanks to Facebook, lately my source of information about science and the world, I learned something new about Labor Day today.
Labor Day’s Violent Roots: The Hard Won Fight for Your Three-Day Weekend
Be sure to watch the video at the end of the article, as it's quite interesting!
I never knew that Labor Day was basically a concession that the government made when laborers were pushing for unionization and safer working conditions. The irony is, of course, that it's a holiday mostly for white-collar workers. Anyone working retail has to work it anyway, as do a lot of other working-class people.
As freelancers, we have more choice in the matter, or at least the semblance of it. Barring any really demanding clients, most of us can decide whether we want to work nights, weekends, and holidays. For the most part I work when work calls, and take time off when it's available (which isn't terribly often). That means I'm sitting down to get a little work in tonight, Labor Day, and in the evening to boot!
What about you? Do you work off hours, such as holidays, or do you try to only work during regular business hours?
